Off-piste Equipment
The right choice of equipment is essential for safety and comfort of use. We recommend that a course be taken to ensure the equipment can be used quickly and efficiently.
Avalanche transceiver:
Necessary from the moment one leaves the pisted run. Check the batteries regularly and carry spares. Transceiver to be worn under clothing. Not in backpack, as packs sometimes get ripped off in an avalanche. When leaving the piste check everyone’s transceiver is working correctly.
Snow shovel:
Essential part of avalanche safety equipment. Reduces time taken in the recovery of an avalanche victim. Each person in the group should carry one.
Avalanche probe:
The fastest way to pinpoint a victim buried in the snow. Should be carried by everyone in the group.
Back pack:
Should be around 30litres carrying capacity. Essential in carrying all equipment and food supplies.
Map:
Preferably 1/25000
Compass:
Goes along with the map.
GPS:
Very useful in pinpointing exact position.
Skis:
Shorter and wider nowadays allowing easier skiing in deep powder. Has to be well maintained.
Poles:
Telescopic which can also be used as avalanche probes.
First aid kit.
Snow shoes:
Used by snowboards to hike.
Snow skins:
Attaches to the bottom of skis enabling the skiers to walk/slide on their skis.
