Ice Diving
For the divers, a truly surreal experience is to go scuba diving underneath the frozen lake in Le Lac. Unlike diving with a wet suit, it’s possible to wear thick clothing under the dry suit to keep you warm. By all accounts there is quite a bit to see down there and the still quiet water under the ice can make for an eerie dive. For the best dive, head out on a clear day so the sunlight can penetrate the layer of snow and ice. We haven’t experienced it yet but it’s definitely on our list of things to do!

SKI JÖRING
Ski Jöring, the old tradition of being towed on skis behind a horse - popular in the old US West and traditionally in other cultures - is making a bit of a comeback but normally as a demonstration sport at festivals: in Tignes you can try it for yourself at the School of Equestrian Adventure and Ski Jöring. Traditional pony rides in the snow and over a frozen lake are on offer too.Trips from €32

Ice Skating
Ice-skating was one of the original winter sports, and it is now making a comeback at various resorts around the world. One of the most beautiful places to Ice Skate is Tignes. Each season the west side of the frozen lake gets turned into a hugely popular rink. Rather than gliding (or shuffling embarrassingly) round in circles until you get bored, the 500m-long circuit allows you to explore the lake's nooks and crannies, surrounded by huge peaks. It's a great way to round off a day on the slopes - especially if you're looking for something romantic.
